The Kings Head, Wincheap

I’ve driven past this little gem a million times when visiting my Mum in the school holidays, but last week on a trip to Canterbury we decided today was the day to pop in and say hello.

The Kings Head is a 15th Century Inn located in Wincheap literally on the borders of Canterbury and offers a vast array of local ciders and real ales which kept Beard happy, and the white wine was served crisp and cold, really cold which is just how I like it. It’s one of those places you’d take someone who has travelled hundreds of miles to check out “a proper British pub”. The difference about here? It has a fabulous selection of board games that kept the kids entertained for ages and Austyn was more than happy watching Peppa Pig due to the super-fast wifi you can tap into. It’s the little things that make a big difference.

They also offer a handful of accommodation – can’t comment on that as we didn’t do an overnighter but if the pub is anything to go by, I’d say you’d be more than comfortable up there and for double rooms from £72 including breakfast, you can’t go wrong!

We were greeted at our table by an amiable guy who went out of his way to find a sweet, quiet spot, so Josh didn’t get antsy about how busy it was in there. Likewise, he even bargained with Finn to get him to eat all his veg and then he could have a free pudding! But the warm welcome didn’t stop there when it came to Austyns nap time – the lights were dimmed over our table and his milk heated up without a grumble. I cannot stand it when you go for a meal and are told “sorry we can’t heat the baby’s milk because of health and safety” or “we can’t give you a jug of boiling water, you’ll have to leave the bottle on the bar”. Nothing was too much trouble.

The food was absolutely divine with ample portion sizes; the menu changes all the time, and there’s a large selection of specials with a good kids menu for a price that won’t break the bank. One word of warning, this is a popular place, and at weekends I would definitely advise booking in advance, and you won’t be disappointed with a lovely family meal. The staff here are excellent. Moreover, the food is stunning.
